We are a group of families in the Lower Mainland
(Langley, Surrey, White Rock, Delta) area of British Columbia, Canada
who met because we all have loved ones who suffer psychosis, and who are or were
involved in the Fraser South EPI program. (Early Psychosis Intervention Program).
We therefore know
the turmoil,
devastation, confusion, upset and grief you may be experiencing with psychosis
in your family. We believe however, that we can help you, much as we have helped each
other in this group over the past year.
Each one of us in the group were once individuals trying to handle psychosis
alone, we were ignorant of the causes, treatments, outcomes to be expected,
and a hundred other details which would help us deal with this nasty illness.
Luckily we had a common bond,
our children were all involved in the Fraser South EPI program, a relatively new program with
motivated staff and new concepts for dealing with mental illness.
The first thing we
learned was that recovery is expected! We then learned that we, as parents, were
considered an essential part of the recovery team... What a novel idea!
We learned that we
were
equal partners in our childrens treatment as we were the 'experts' on our children.
To summarize our efforts, we have learned everything we can about psychosis, and continue
to do so. We have shared our experiences and many, many 'insights' as we recognize that
while all cases are individual, there are experiences, thoughts and emotions common to us all.
We continue to support and respect each other as we live this journey.
What we don't do is offer a diagnosis or medical advice, we leave that up to the experts.
|
What we do offer is expert guidance from real people intimately involved with this illness.
