Story 4

As I read through the stories posted on this site, from parents of young adults who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, I can't help but pick out a common thread. What stands out for me, is the resilience of these young people.

My son was diagnosed last year, after two, possibly three psychotic breaks. His first episode was four years ago, where he was suicidal. Schizophrenia was a possibilty at that time, but there was no firm diagnosis. He was prescribed Risperdone and was compliant with his treatment. In the meantime, my son experienced much frustration in obtaining an appointment with a psychiatrist, in an attempt to investigate the possiblity of a mental illness. In that frustration, he decided to stop his medication and see if he had any symptoms. Almost three months later, he developed a full blown case of psychosis and was hospitalized for three months. He has just turned 24 on June 30th.

When I look back on how far he has come since his world came crashing down, his determination, cooperation and acceptance of his illness, is most inspiring to me. He is living independently, with a room-mate, attends college part-time, and holds down a part-time job. The side effects of his medication are a real challenge for him, and is heart-breaking for me. But he constantly looks for ways to deal with them. My journey with my son and his mental illness has given me more strength and determination and an admiration for the courage that these young people demonstrate in coping with their illness.
