Helpful Hints:
The information presented here is intended to help you by providing hints
which other parents have found to be useful. I
intentionally avoid using the word 'advice' as we parents can only say what
worked for us in our situations. Each situation is individual. If you find
specific strategies or material which work well for you, please consider
sharing the ideas with us so we can add to the usefullness of this page.
The number one hint anyone can give is for you to learn all you
can about every aspect of mental illness. The more you know and understand,
the more you can help your loved one, and the more you will be able handle
the various challenges.
Hint number two is that not all the challenges may be 'issues' with your
loved one. You may have issues of your own which need to be addressed.
You really need to examine your own thoughts, feelings and motivation to
make sure you are in good shape to provide the best support for recovery.
Think about hint number two for a while... Recognize that this situation is
new for you, and you were probably not trained ahead of time how to handle it.
Don't expect to be perfect, don't expect that you will be able to maintain
your lifestyle without adjustments, don't expect that your thoughts from
yesterday will be valid today and in the future. You are experiencing
a traumatic event and you will need to adapt.
Hint number three; Develop patience, patience and more patience. In many cases
there is no quick solution. You may need to ride out the ups and downs for an
extended period and only patience will keep you on track.
