Research Study: Stigma and Mental Illness
Stigma can have serious negative effects on people with mental illness and their family members.
We are mental illness researchers interested in developing a scale to assess internalized stigma in first-degree family members (parents, brothers, sisters, and children) of people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder.
As a questionnaire, the scale will gather information about stigma in family members of people with mental illness and aim to improve coping and the overall well being of the family network.
If you are a first-degree family member of a person with mental illness and would like more information about participating please contact Dr. Jehannine Austin or Emily Morris at mental.illness@ubc.ca or by phone 604 875 2000 (ext. 4733).

The Mental Health Commission of Canada Knowledge Exchange Centre initiative is interested in your advice and support. They are conducting a survey to advise them with respect to the creation of the Knowledge Exchange Centre. The survey will assist them in identifying good, promising and best practices in mental health knowledge exchange.
Their definition of knowledge exchange is “the engagement of people living with mental illness and their families, as well as the public, service providers, decision makers, and researchers in obtaining, sharing and utilizing information, knowledge and skills to improve health outcomes based on evidence, experience, promising practices or policies”.
They have to date collected information about more than 600 mental health focused websites in Canada and internationally. They have also reviewed all available published literature from key research journals.
They want to ensure that they do not miss other sources of knowledge exchange initiatives that you may be aware of. If you know of a good practice that you would like to share, please fill in the survey referenced at: http://www.mentalhealthcommission.ca/survey.
An update from GetHelpEarly.
As some of you know Tara is selling jewelry on-line during her time away teaching in South Korea. In order to help raise funds for the website Tara is developing a line of jewelry called ‘the world around me’.
For more information visit www.daughterofluxury.blogspot.com . Here you’ll read her about her fundraising initiative (as well as the recent extraction of her wisdom teeth and trip to China!!)
Please visit www.gethelpearly.ca if you haven’t lately. Early in the summer the work of a talented artist in the Northeast was added to the site. In the past few days the work of an amazing artist from southeastern Ontario was added to the site as well. Wonderful pen and ink drawings, prints, and uniquely fabulous video art can be accessed in the art gallery.
Recently, a gift shop was added to gethelpearly.ca.
A reminder to pass onto EPI youth that we’re looking for links featuring the sale of various art work in their on-line store, blog or website.
